Obituary for Richard Allen "Dick" Rice

LTC, U. S. Army (Ret.) Richard A. “Dick” Rice, 71, of Reedville, Virginia passed away October 20, 2014. He was born on June 26, 1943 in Medford, Mass. to the late Arthur E. and Lillian Crowe Rice.

He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Janet Conley Rice; his daughter, Ellen Toole (John) of Herndon, Va.; his two sons, Jeffrey Rice (Cena) of Manassas, Va. and Sean Rice (Patricia) of Fairfax, Va.; his brother, Robert Rice (Dale) of Amherst, Mass.; his sister-in-law, Janice Gurry of Duxbury, Mass. and two brothers-in-law, Robert Conley (Kathleen) of Manchester By-The-Sea, Mass. and William Conley (Margaret) of Wakefield, Mass. along with six grandchildren, Megan, Ryan, Brooke, Evan, Bridget and Thomas all of Northern, Va.

He was a 1965 graduate of the University of Massachusetts and received his MS degree in Counsel Relations at C W Post, Long Island University.

Dick served in the U. S. Army for 23 years and earned the title of Lieutenant Colonel and Counterintelligence and Foreign Area Officer. He received numerous medals including the Soldier Medal and the Bronze Star. Dick attended Japanese Language School and the Foreign Service Institute of Washington. He was the first army officer to attend Bangladesh Staff College. He was serving on the Joint Chiefs of Staff when he retired from the Army in 1987.

After retiring from the military, he spent 16 years as a site Facility Security Officer in Northern, Va.

He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church; a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 11667 and the St. George Assembly 2821.

Dick was happiest cooking, watching CNN, spending time with his grandchildren and his dogs and enjoying his retirement on the “RIVAH”.

A Mass of Resurrection will be said 11:00 a. m. Monday, November 3, 2014 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Kilmarnock.
