Obituary for Eula Phair Higdon

Eula Harper-Phair Higdon, a beautiful southern belle, went out on the morning tide on November 13, 2014 at the age of 94. Born February 5, 1920 she was the daughter of Chester Starr Phair and Bessie Belle Harper and the granddaughter of John H. Phair and Marian Starr-Croasdale and Captain George W. Harper and Mary Ella Tolley.

Eula had a typical small town childhood in Laurel, MD filled with dance recitals and school plays. She enjoyed the attention of her Aunt Vera Flester and cousins, Miriam and Buster, also of Laurel. Summers though, were spent with visits to her Grandparent's home in Palmer, where she would bound out of the car to run and play with her cousin June [Harper]. Splashing up and down the creek shore they would stop to marvel at their Uncle Preston Harper's latest invention and to pin wood curls from his lathe into their hair.

Given her English-Scotch-Irish descent her life was a glow of love and compassion, sprinkled with a generous dose of laughter, humor and mischief to brighten the days of everyone around her. She learned how to embrace the eccentricities of her aunts Ella Brown Harper and Eula Harper-Chilton and eventually became a member of the GSMD [General Society of Mayflower Descendants], an FFV [First Families of VA] and a member of the DAR [Daughters of the American Revolution]. These connections provided hours of enjoyment for she and her cousins June Harper and Betty Croasdale going off on genealogical adventures well into their 80's.

Eula and Robert E. Higdon were married in 1941 and spent 55 years together. Eula is survived by Terrie and Dave Dustin, Mike and Joyce Higdon, Chet and Theresa Higdon and Frank and Elaine Higdon, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Many of whom traveled from far and wide to visit her in her final days in hospice.

Eula had a keen sense of compassion and altruism. Her love and generosity was shared with her family and friends and extended out into the community. Eula's personality was a ray of sunshine, fondly remembered and forever warm.

A Birthday Celebration of her life will be hosted on February 22, 2015 in White Stone.
Internment and a Memorial Celebration will take place at a later date in Laurel, MD.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest a donation to the Alzheimer's Association, Middle Peninsula/Northern Neck, 7335 Lewis Avenue, PO Box 1881, Gloucester, VA 23061

Our thanks to Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock for their assistance with arrangements.
