Obituary for Elizabeth Craven "Betsy" Chambers (Craven)

Elizabeth Craven "Betsy" Chambers (Craven)
Elizabeth Craven Chambers (Betsy)

Sadly and suddenly on Wednesday evening, July 15, 2015 Betsy Chambers left our world to go live with her Lord.
Betsy was born June 20, 1947 to Lewis Hermon Craven and Mary Leake Craven in Washington, DC. She attended Montgomery County, Md. schools and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington D.C. Betsy played the bass clarinet and she loved sailing and swimming with her family during vacations at Deep Creek Lake, Md.
Betsy attended Baltimore Junior College and in September of 1969 she met Robert P. Chambers, Jr (Bob) to whom she has been married for nearly 45 years. She is survived by her husband Bob, her son, Richard P. Chambers and his wife Christina, her daughter Deborah C. McKean and her husband Jim, and she leaves four precious granddaughters Anabel (8), Natalie (6), Ellie (5) and Kailie (1). She is survived by two brothers, The Honorable Thomas L. Craven and Dr. Philip C. Craven and an aunt, Alice Leake Lawless Lash.
Betsy held an associate degree and was an occupational therapist assistant. She worked at several senior care facilities and later began teaching nursery school at a number of facilities.
Betsy and her family were members of the Chesapeake Bay Alberg 30 Association, and sailing their boat with their many friends was a large part of their family life. Later, a larger sailboat took them on years of adventure in the Bahamas and Caribbean. They were also members of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake.
Over the years, Betsy developed a love for swimming. She joined the Maryland Masters swim team in 1991, then competed with the YMCA Stripers Masters team for some 15 plus years. She recently completed a swim across the Rappahannock River with others, a two mile swim she had been wanting to do. She also loved the game of golf and played often. When not swimming or golfing, she went kayaking with several groups. Betsy loved music and she was a member of the Northern Neck Music Study Club, and she performed for years with The Chesapeake Chorale.
Betsy was a kind and loving person who very much loved the Lord. She always wore a big smile, and spent many hours a week at her church singing in the choir, serving on committees, working with the women of the church, going to Sunday school and Bible study and was teaching in the Vacation Bible School when suddenly, God called her.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at the Kilmarnock United Methodist Church in Kilmarnock, Virginia at 11AM on Saturday, July 25, 2015.
Those who wish to honor Betsy may make a contribution to either The Massey Cancer Center, PO Box 843042, Richmond, VA 23284 or The Rappahannock General Hospital Cancer Center, PO Box 588, Kilmarnock, VA 22482.
