Obituary for Herman Chaple "Sam" Watson Sr.

Herman Chaple "Sam"  Watson Sr.
On Wednesday, July 13, 2016, Herman Chaple Watson, Sr., affectionately known as “Sam”, went peacefully to join his beloved wife in their heavenly home at the age of 88. He was born December 5, 1927 to Furman Chaple and Mattie Pauline Watson in Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Watson married the love of his life on July 9, 1957, and moved to Kilmarnock. First coming to the Northern Neck Area as a door-to-door salesman. They established The Shoe Store on West Church Street in 1958. He was also a successful real estate investor.

Mr. Watson was well known throughout the community for his kindness and generosity, often opening his store on Christmas for someone in need.

He was a member of the Kilmarnock Baptist Church for over 56 years, where he served as a deacon.

Until recent years, they enjoyed their winter months at their home in Sun City Center, Florida, where they were members of the Kings Point Country Club.

Mr. Watson was predeceased by his wife, Gladys, and their granddaughter, April Cynthia Watson.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Flowe of Charlotte, N.C.. His sons, Herman C. Watson, Jr of Kilmarnock, Michael W. Watson of Troy, VA, his daughters and sons in law, Vickie L. and Keefe Coburn of Dumfries, VA, Kristie W. and Adam Duryea of Kilmarnock. His grandchildren, April Tucker and her husband, P.R. of Charlotte, N.C., Samantha Coburn, Katilyn, Cameron, and Connor Duryea, and Autumn Watson. Four great grandchildren, Mitchell, Landon, Kathlynn, and Olivia Tucker.

He also leaves behind his beloved Jackie Owens Bunns who has lovingly cared for the family many years, Patricia Gaddy, Brenda Loper, Rita Boyd, Dawn Thompsen, and Fran Freeman. Thank you for the loving care that our father received during his final chapter.

The family is also eternally grateful for the numerous caregivers from RWC at Home Care, and the staff at Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital for their professional care that was given.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 p. m. Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the Currie Funeral Home, with interment in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Kilmarnock, VA. Visitation will be held one hour prior. The Reverend John H. Farmer, officiating.
