David Vincent Haynie, Sr., age 81, of Reedville died Sunday, May 17 from complications of lung cancer. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Capt. E. Vincent Haynie and Frances Armsworthy Haynie.

Raised on Cockrell Creek in Reedville, he was an avid sports fisherman and golfer who enjoyed cruising the Chesapeake Bay. He graduated from St. Christopher’s School in Richmond and from University of South Carolina, Columbia.

His maritime career began at age 16 rowing the striker boat on his father’s menhaden fishing vessel in Lewes, DE. I was very saddened to read the news of Captain David Vincent Haynie passing. He was a role model, a father, grandfather, husband, friend and a wealth of knowledge all rolled into an amazing, charming, pleasant and wise man. No doubt, he will be sorely missed in the lives of so many that he was part of throughout his legacy of seafaring from the Bay of Fundy to the Gulf of Mexico...and Reedville, which has lost a treasure. Heartfelt prayers for all of the family and friends, Sincerely, Matthew and Alicia
