Obituary for Agnes Evelyn Smith
Agnes Evelyn Smith joined her parents, sister, husband, daughter and son-in-law in heaven after savoring 101 years of life. Born on Long Island, NY, she relocated to the Northern Neck in 1994.
Working full time her entire adult life she started first as the office manager at Peterson Shipyard, then later helped grow the marina her father built in 1948.
With her husband Percy, she enjoyed watching their harness horses being trained and raced at tracks in New York and Florida. In the years after the unexpected death of her husband, and her retirement in 1984, she became a world traveler. Machu Picchu, the Great Pyramids and the Taj Mahal are among the iconic places she visited.
Passionate about healthy living, she took vitamins and did yoga in the 1970’s before it was cool, and enjoyed exploring different forms of spirituality. It was not unusual to see her doing a headstand or chanting, a copy of Prevention magazine resting open on the nightstand. Always up for adventure, she loved to drive, and didn’t stop until the age of 99. Her business cards read “travel companion” and she took many road trips throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe with her friends.
Definitely not your cookie baking grandmother, she did however love food and all kinds of cuisines provided someone else was cooking it.
The universe chose unusual brackets for her life. Born during the Spanish Flu pandemic, she left quietly in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak. She was an avid reader and news enthusiast. She remained engaged in the events of the world to the end.
Her cheerful, outgoing and generous nature were hallmarks of her character. Agnes will be greatly missed by her two granddaughters, their spouses, two great-grandsons and the many, many friends who loved her.
