Obituary for David Alan Hall

David Alan Hall, age 91, of White Stone, VA, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2021 with family by his side. In January 2021, he was given two weeks to live. Defying all odds, he fought through until Memorial Day, when the flags were already at half mast. His last two months of life were spent at Commonwealth Senior Living, where his wife was already a resident. What a blessing it was for her to have “Her David” closer for that time.

A celebration of his life will be held at his home later this month.

David was born in Washington, D.C. on July 23, 1929. He graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School, attended The Coast Guard Academy and continued on to receive an Engineering degree from George Washington University. He then earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from American University.

David was married to Jane Paulding Harriman on June 21, 1952. They were married for 69 years, and he was truly her world. What a ride they had!

David began his career as an engineer for Atlantic Research Corporation. As a man who was as passionate as he was hardworking, he eventually followed his dream of becoming a stock broker - first at E. F. Hutton and completing the capstone of his successful career at Smith Barney (now Morgan Stanley). He enjoyed boating, sailing, playing tennis and, of course, a good scotch. He especially took great pleasure in intimidating men half his age at the YMCA with his rigorous, hour-long workout three times a week, right up until COVID. He was also actively involved in Rotary and volunteered at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.

David is survived by his wife, Jane, his daughter, Dianne and her husband, Stephen, his granddaughter, Amanda and her husband, Kyle, his grandson, Stephen, Jr., and his great granddaughter, Riley, who brought him tremendous joy. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Susan and his nephews, Steven, Timothy, and Douglas and their families.

David’s family wishes to thank Hospice of Virginia and the staff at Commonwealth Senior Living for going above and beyond in their care. Finally, they wish to extend their sincere gratitude to neighbors and friends for their continual support during this time.
