Obituary for George Edward "George Ed" Hutchings
George Edward Hutchings was born in Kilmarnock, Virginia, on January 29, 1932 to John E. and Katherine Hutchings.
George Ed was a devoted Christian and was baptized at Kilmarnock Baptist Church July 12, 1947 and remained an active member for nearly 76 years until his death. He was a deacon and had been a member of various committees over the years.
As a boy growing up, he carried the Richmond News Leader newspaper in the evening after school and worked with his grandfather at his small boat railway. He also became interested in model airplanes. He graduated from Kilmarnock High school in 1950. He was active in sports – baseball, softball, basketball and duck and ten pin bowling.
In recent years, George Ed was a member of the Northern Neck RC Club and loved to tinker on models and go to the “flying field” to enjoy radio controlled model airplanes.
After graduation, he served as Second and Chief Engineer on menhaden fish boats in Reedville, VA, for nearly 20 years, traveling the Atlantic Ocean from New Jersey to North Carolina and also went south in the winter to Louisiana. After his father passed away, he came back to work locally to take care of his mother. He worked as a mechanic at Crowther Ford in Kilmarnock for nearly 30 years until retirement.
George had an extensive involvement in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), starting at age 23 until his death. His father, grandfather, mother and sister had also been members. He initially joined Irvington Lodge No. 205 in 1955 and then Mathews Encampment No. 47 in 1956. In addition, he was a member of many other lodges in Virginia and he held many offices during his nearly 70 year involvement. These included Department Commander of Virginia with the rank of Brigadier General serving as Department Commander three times. He had just returned from a 5-day trip to Roanoke, VA. In early May, he participated in the 89th annual IOOF Pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery for a wreath laying. He was looking forward to a trip in August to Des Moines, Iowa, which would include a visit to his great nieces and nephews in Omaha, NE.
George stayed busy and was so proud that at 91 years old, he only took one aspirin a day – that was it for medications!! And we all know how much he liked to eat - he so enjoyed fellowship with friends at a banquet!!!
Preceded in death were his wife, Novella Abbott Hutchings, mother and father, sister Roxanna Moone and brother Cyrus Hastings Hutchings. George Ed is survived by his niece, Martha “Marty” Sutherland of Kilmarnock, great-nephew Winnie McCrobie (Lynnie) of Weems, great nieces and nephews in Omaha, NE, and many wonderful family members of his brother Cyrus, including Cyrus’ wife Clare.
A viewing will be held at Currie Funeral Home on June 5 from 5-7 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Claybrook Baptist Church Cemetery in Weems on June 6 at 11 a.m. which will include participation of the IOOF.
