Obituary for James Lewis "Jim" Harris Sr.

HARRIS, Mr. James Lewis, Sr., age 85, died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on September 15,2022.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sandra Throckmorton Harris; sons, James Lewis Harris Jr. (Connie) of Woodstock, Ga. and Dr. Clifton Lee Harris (Felicia) of Golden, Colo.; grandsons, James L. Harris III, Atlanta, Ga., Christian T. Harris, Greenville, S.C, Alan Michael Harris, Woodstock, Ga.; and granddaughter, Alexis Taylor Harris of Charlottesville, Va.; and his only brother, Stuart Lee Harris (Sandra) of Richmond, Va.

Jim was born on May 17, 1937 in Hanover County, to Clifton L .and Ivy Pollard Harris. He graduated from Rockville High School in 1956 and then served several years in the Army Reserve. Jim married the love of his life, Sandra Throckmorton, on December 21, 1963 and started his career as a lineman at the C&P Telephone Company. He worked his way to become a foreman and then was promoted to the engineering department. After several years of service he retired early and began a new adventure managing his band, the Katz-n-Jammers, with his wife, Sandra as the lead singer, and enjoyed many years playing for military reunions, receptions and on-base officers' clubs. When his boys were young he generously gave 10 years to coaching Little League baseball and Optimist League football in Danville, Virginia. Jim or Jimbo, as he was sometimes called, enjoyed working with his hands and building all things with wood. He was especially good with home repair or fixing anything that was broken. His pride and joy was building his home on the Chesapeake Bay, also known as the "Rivah," and appropriately named his home "Harris Haven," where every summer all his family, extended family and friends enjoyed countless July 4th celebrations that will be cherished forever.

Jim was the kind of husband, father, brother and friend that anyone would be proud to have. We, as family and friends, will deeply miss his humor, his kindness, his joy for living, his fun loving spirit, his goodness towards all who were in his presence. He loved his wife and family unconditionally. May his memory be eternal.

A special thank you to Poole Funeral Home of Woodstock, Georgia for preparing and transporting Jim to Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock, Va. Also, the family wishes to thank his caregivers and all the wonderful people from Hospice of Georgia who made his last days with us peaceful.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 17 at the Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock, 116 E. Church St. The funeral service will be on Sunday, September 18 at 3 p.m. at Irvington Baptist Church, 53 King Carter Drive, Irvington, Va, 22480.
