Obituary for Joyce Conklin Hughes (Conklin)
Weems - Joyce Madeline Conklin Hughes, 87, of Weems died March 18, 2021.
Joyce was a lifelong member of Wesley Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Weems. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who was affectionately known to her family (and many others) as “Granny”. Nothing filled her life with more joy than the times she spent with her family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Jill H. and Curtis D. Hand of Wicomico Church; a son and daughter-in-law Ronald A. and Charlotte R. Hughes of Lively; five grandchildren, Bryan A. Hughes (Whitney), Laura H. Hand (Steve), Kaitlyn H. Treadwell, Lucy Hughes and Madeline (Madie) H. Stephens (Samuel); and 5 great-grandchildren; Emma Hand, Austin Hand, Ronnie Hand, Elijah Treadwell and Sammy Stephens. She is also survived by a sister Hazel Johnson of Irvington, a sister-in-law Alice Fallin of Wicomico Church, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joyce was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years Austin LeRoy Hughes, Sr. and her eldest son Austin L. (Art) Hughes, Jr.; her parents Roy and Addie Conklin, brothers Leroy Conklin Jr., Howard Conklin, and sisters Addie J. Conklin, Mildred George, Ida Carter and Delma Haynie.
Private graveside services will be held Sunday March 21, 2021 at Wesley Evangelical Presbyterian Church; Bill Smith officiating. A memorial service will be held this fall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 70 Faith Circle, Weems, VA 22576.
