Obituary for Lawrence Stuart Dunaway
Lawrence Stuart Dunaway, 86, of Kilmarnock, Virginia passed away on June 10, 2021. He was President of Tri-Star Supermarket, Inc. and a U S Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Martin Dunaway; his children, Michael Stuart Dunaway (Jenny) of Lancaster, Mark Carlson Dunaway (Miguel) of North Baldwin, New York, Marcelle Dunaway Greene (Bob) of Mechanicsville and Melissa Jean Dunaway of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Christian Anthony, Ian Dunaway, Brandon Dunaway, Meghan Anthony and Tyler Dunaway; brother, Bobby Dunaway (Helga); sister-in-law, Janet C. Worsham (Wes); stepsons, Hugh Kelley (Caroline) of Canton, MA, and Hurst Kelley (Jennifer) of Richmond and their families. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Born in Ottoman, VA, on December 3, 1934, to Lawrence Tankard Dunaway and Ella Stuart Dunaway, he was a lifelong resident of Lancaster County. He was preceded in death by his wife and the mother of his children, Jean Carlson Dunaway; sisters, Lillian Dunaway Potter and Nettie “Pearl” Dunaway McNeal; brother, Clyde Wayne Dunaway; and nephew, Sgt. William Steven Potter.
Stuart was known for his generosity of spirit and deed. He shunned the spotlight, making many gifts anonymously. His life-long contributions to the community were acknowledged in 2012 when he received Trinity Episcopal Church’s Unsung Hero Award.
Food was never far from his mind. His work at A&C and Tri-Star Supermarket, Inc. over 60 years, provided frequent opportunities to deliver comforting food, especially Tri-Star’s well known fried chicken. His understanding of community needs, led him to support the River Road Food Pantry and volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Fondly remembering the wonderful meals prepared by his mother-in-law, Marcella Carlson, he delighted in planning gatherings for his family, Tri-Star employees and friends where good food and drink were assured.
Baseball was a life-long interest. Country music, western movies and TV reruns were sources of pleasure for him. Saturday nights often found Stuart and Jean attending a community dance, allowing him to demonstrate his Elvis Presley inspired dance moves.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m. Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Interment will follow the service at St. Mary's Whitechapel Episcopal Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends 5-7 p. m. Monday, June 14, 2021 at the funeral home.
