Robert Lewis Longshore (Bob), of White Stone Virginia, passed away on Saturday October 8, 2022, after a sudden and abrupt illness, at the age of 88, in Richmond Virginia.
Bob Longshore was born in Fort Payne, Alabama on October 26, 1933 to Robert and Ann Longshore. His younger brother, John David was born in 1936. The family moved several times while the brothers were growing up due to Bob Senior’s career as a surveyor, finally settling in Decatur, Georgia, where Bob attended Druid Hills High School. Bob graduated from Georgia Tech as an Industrial Engineer, and promptly joined the U.S. Army. He later completed a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech. Serving over 20 years in the Army which included multiple tours of service in Vietnam, Bob retired from the military at the rank of Lt. Colonel, and began his next career at the George Washington University, where he retired as a Vice President.
Bob married his loving wife Eleanor in 1954 and they were married for 59 years, until her death in 2013. Bob and Eleanor had 4 children, daughters Marianne (husband Robbie Werth, daughters Elena and Amanda), Lynda (husband Jim Penland, daughters Jessica and Angela), and sons Kenneth (deceased, wife Vickie, daughter Carlie), and David (wife Kimberly, sons Denton and Dante). He was also a proud great-grandfather of 5. Following Eleanor’s death, Bob was fortunate to build a relationship with Ann Burgess, who was a devoted companion and friend to him until his death.
Bob and Eleanor retired along a quiet waterway of the Chesapeake Bay in White Stone Virginia because of their love for country life and boating. There, they enjoyed many friendships and frequent visits from granddaughters. Bob was an active volunteer in the White Stone Community. He held a variety of volunteer positions at White Stone United Methodist Church and the Tabbs Creek Civic Association.
Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He spent a great deal of his leisure time running, fishing, boating, camping and other outdoor pursuits. He was proud to have completed a number of long-distance races including the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. He also enjoyed working on and restoring vintage cars and especially enjoyed European sports cars.
A memorial service and internment will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 19 at the White Stone Methodist Church, 118 Methodist Church Road, in White Stone, Virginia, with a reception to follow at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury in Irvington, Virginia.
