Obituary for Samuel Edward "Sam" Monroe III
Irvington- Samuel E. Monroe, III died March 27, 2022 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA. He was born April 19, 1959 in Dallas, Texas, the son of Samuel E. and Dianne Chase Monroe.
Sam graduated from Christchurch School in Saluda, VA in 1978 and Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.
Sam loved all of life's beautiful things, constantly seeing good in everyone and everything. He loved the outdoors and the experiences from his years of travel and working during each step of his journeys. Living in Irvington, Va. for the last 25 years, Sam loved and dedicated himself to his community and the many friends he met there. He always enjoyed sunrises and sunsets, the changing of seasons and the natural beauty of local flora all around.
A friend to all, Sam never missed an opportunity for a conversation whether he knew you or not, especially with his dogs, Dixie and George, who were always prepared for a chat. As a prolific reader, he kept everyone on their toes with his vast knowledge.
We want to thank all the wonderful nurses that helped him through his last weeks at VCU Medical Center. They got to know Sam and his positive outlook on everyone around him. His constant conversations always ended with "How lucky I am", expressing his personal gratitude to the experiences he had, and, more so, the opportunity to share them with his family and friends.
In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his nephew, Zachary Edward Monroe. Surviving Sam is his father Samuel Edward Monroe of Irvington; his sister, Jean F. Monroe of Richmond, Va.; his brother, Chase and his wife Jennifer Monroe of Charlotte, NC; his three nephews Chase Jr., Jackson, and Ben Monroe; his uncles, Douglas Monroe of Irvington, Norvell Monroe of Santa Fe and aunt, Barbara Chase Webber of Houston; and many cousins.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 a. m. Thursday, April 28, 2022 at Historic Christ Church in Irvington, Va. A celebration of Sam will follow in the Bayne Center. Those who wish to remember Sam in a special way may make a gift in his memory to The Chesapeake Academy, 107 Steamboat Road, Irvington, VA 22480.
