Obituary for Tanya Moore Bohlke

Tanya Moore Bohlke, 84, an avid reader and lover of nature and animals, died peacefully in her home on August 24, 2022 after a brief illness. She was surrounded by family.
She received her B.A. from Grinnell College in 1960, where she was a member of the Mortarboard Society and her M.A. in Psychology in 1963. As a Licensed Professional Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist, Tanya spent most of her career working at the Tidewater Child Development Clinic in Norfolk, Virginia where she served as Director from 1996 until her retirement in 2001.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles M. Moore and Dorothea I. Moore. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Glen Bohlke, of Irvington, Virginia; three children, Kecia (Kia) Ware of Tappahannock and her husband, Ned; Todd Bohlke of Virginia Beach and his wife, Nicole; and Brent Bohlke of San Diego, California and his partner, Danielle Hargis; one sister, April Moore, her husband, Andrew Schmookler of Orkney Springs, Virginia and their children, Nathaniel Schmookler of Nashville, Tennessee, Terra Schmookler Fuhr of San Diego, California, and Aaron Schmookler of Rainier, Washington; one granddaughter, Catesby Rose Ware of Tappahannock; and one devoted cat, Darcy.
A winner of multiple gold medals in the regional Senior Olympics, Tanya also enjoyed exercise, travel, knitting, sewing, quilting and many other crafts. A burial service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, September 3 at Princess Anne Memorial Park, 1110 North Great Neck Rd., Virginia Beach. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, September 4 in the auditorium at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury, 132 Lancaster Drive, Irvington.
Tanya was a champion for the rights of animals, children, women, immigrants and disadvantaged groups. Her family asks that you consider making a memorial donation to a charity supporting one of these groups or to the RWC Christmas Fund to honor Tanya’s spirit and memory. The family also thanks the wonderful staff of RW-C, Hospice of Virginia and Dr. Joseph Bessler for their outstanding care and compassion during this time.
