Obituary for Vera Hornbacher Romaine (Hornbacher)

VERA HORNBACHER ROMAINE died on February 21st, 2020 in Irvington, Virginia at 101 years of age. Born August 1, 1918 in Sutton, Nebraska to Christina and Reinhold Hornbacher, Vera moved to Portland, Oregon where she met and married Ralph in 1941. Vera and Ralph shared a love of flying, sailing, gardening and golf, and traveled extensively around the world. Ralph taught her to fly in 1941, and she shared the controls with him for the next 64 years.
Vera loved and played Bridge for many years and was an expert at the game, and was active and knowledgeable in real estate which was of great benefit to the family as they lived in multiple houses in more than 10 different states. She had a lovely voice and sang alto in the choir at St John’s church in Cold Spring Harbor, NY. Above all, she was a devoted wife and loving mother to her two sons, always helping and guiding them with her strength and caring. Following Ralph’s death in 2005, she moved to Virginia to be closer to her youngest son and his family. Vera will forever be remembered and loved for the strong and caring woman she was to her family and many friends.
She is survived by her loving sons, Gary and his daughter Jessica, Randolph and his wife Gloria, their two daughters and their four children, and many cousins, nieces and nephews
