Obituary for William Donovan "Dan" McGlasson

WILLIAM DONOVAN “DAN” MCGLASSON
October 3rd, 1946 - December 7th, 2022

William Donovan McGlasson (his friends called him Dan) loved the water, music, and the national parks. He was born in Los Angeles, California on October 3, 1946 and spent his first 11 years living in Redondo Beach - swimming, surfing and fishing in the Pacific Ocean. He then moved to Falls Church, Virginia where he graduated from George C. Marshall High School and attended Richard Bland College. One summer, he worked in a machine shop at Richards, a small company in Tyson Corner, VA, and enjoyed the work so much that he became a machinist, working for several companies over his 40-year career. Dan was a prototype machinist who worked with engineers to make new products for the Defense Department, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

When Dan was not working, he enjoyed music and had a huge record collection. He became a DJ during the 1970s and played music at parties, weddings and other special events. He also learned to windsurf and kayak and spent many hours windsurfing and paddling the rivers, lakes and bays of Virginia. He loved birdwatching, especially raptors, and enjoyed taking long walks on the CandO Canal and other trails in northern Virginia. He spent his vacations at the beach or in national parks, taking wonderful photos and movies of his trips. For the past 15 years, he lived in the Northern Neck, kayaking the creeks and enjoying views of the Potomac and the Chesapeake Bay from his home.

Dan died on December 7, 2022. His life partner, Margie Beane, and friends will miss him.
