WICOMICO CHURCH--- William Frederic “Bill” Reisner, 83, died peacefully on Friday, February 17, 2023 at his home on Barrett Creek in Wicomico Church.
Bill was born on May 23, 1939 in Garfield Memorial Hospital in Washington, D. C. to the late Frederic William Reisner and Gyda Charlotte Hansen Reisner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger brother, Richard Hansen Reisner.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Anne Quintard Thorndike Reisner; his sister Barbara Lou Reisner Young of San Raphael, CA; and his children; Frederic William Reisner II and wife, Sarah of Nashville, TN; Daria Renee Brumbley and husband, Alfred of Delmar, MD; Courtney Jane Reisner of Kilmarnock; John Quintard Reisner and wife, Jessica of Charlotte, NC; his grandchildren, Frederic William Reisner III, Ernest Hardison Reisner, Morgan Trey Brumbley, Jacob Louis Brumbley and wife Meredith, Aaron Joseph Brumbley and wife, Annelise, Mary Brumbley Foster and husband, Jordan , Walter Frederic Reisner, Mae Margaret Reisner and Maclain Anderson Reisner; as well as several in laws and their spouses, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Bill grew up in Silver Spring, MD, attended Montgomery Blair High School, and the University of Maryland before attending OCS in Newport, RI, after which he began his service as Lieutenant JG in the US Navy on the destroyer, USS Mullinix.
In the early 1970’s he returned to Maryland to join his father in the service station business and eventually took over when his father retired.
As a side business and venture called Wintop Farms, Bill got involved with owning, training and running race horses out of Middleburg, VA. This eventually brought him to meet his wife, Anne, in October 1981 when they were introduced by his farrier, Hank Thorndike, Anne’s older brother. They were married the following June.
Bill very quickly embraced Anne’s love of sailing, and after reducing the size of the race horse business, the real adventures began. When their son, John, was 5 weeks old they purchased a 42’ sloop and named it Le Cheval, French for the horse. Soon thereafter was the beginning of many years of cruising the Chesapeake Bay; the Atlantic Ocean as far north as Atlantic City, NJ, south as far as Key West, FL; and east to the Bahamas, namely the Abacos and Exumas.
He was greatly interested in the Northern Neck and was involved in many community organizations here. Bill was a member for several years and then Chairman of the Board of Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury as well as on the RWC Foundation Board. Bay Aging’s board saw him as a member and later as Chairman. His participation on the Community Services board saw him involved in the establishment of the New Horizons Apartments on School Street. Special Olympics were dear to his heart and he enjoyed being a coach for a local Little League baseball team.
Bill thoroughly enjoyed his life and retirement in the Northern Neck, including having lunches with good friends; and participating in the fellowship and all activities at the church he loved, Wicomico Parish Church, where he was an active member for many years.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30, Saturday, March 11 at Wicomico Parish Church in Wicomico Church, VA, followed by a Celebration of Life reception at the Good Luck Cellars.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Northumberland County Rescue Squad; the Animal Welfare League of the Northern Neck; Wicomico Parish Church Endowment, P O Box 70, Wicomico Church, VA 22579; Chesapeake Academy, 107 Steamboat Road, Irvington, VA 22480; or Special Olympics of Virginia.
