Obituary for Winifred Elaine Biddlecomb Delano (Biddlecomb)
Winifred Elaine Biddlecomb Delano, 87 of Reedville, Virginia died May 21, 2022. She was born on October 11, 1934 in Fairport, Virginia daughter of the late Walter Joseph and Maria McCullough Biddlecomb.
Surviving are her children W. Beale Delano, Jr. (Anne) of Columbus, Indiana, Winifred B. Delano of Monroe, Ohio and Maria Trew Delano (Roy Stephens) of Lake Placid, Florida; a grandson Lawrence C. Delano of Columbus, Indiana; a sister Johanna B. Shahan of Hagerstown, Maryland; a brother J. Dudley Biddlecomb (Anita) of Fairport and a sister-in-law Beverley D. Biddlecomb of Fairport. She treasured her role as Aunt Frit to Beth, Brooks, Ann, Maria “Newie”, Lou, Philip, Frederick, Walter, Emily, Amy, Alfred, Joseph and Charlie and their children. She was preceded in death by her two infant brothers Walter Biddlecomb and David Biddlecomb, her sister Maria B. Rogers, her brother Fred M. Biddlecomb, her husband W. Beale Delano and her brothers-in-law Lawrence C. Delano, Donald B. Shahan and F. Ray Rogers, Jr.
She was the valedictorian of her graduating class of Reedville High School and then attended and graduated from St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, Virginia. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman’s College before graduating from Longwood College with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education. She was a lifelong learner continuing her studies at Simmons College, the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University and others. She started her teaching career at Middlesex High School. She was very involved with Aylett Country Day School during the years her children attended the school. She retired as a teacher and librarian at St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Virginia. She volunteered for many years with Reading Partners and the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum. She was a lifelong member of Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church in Fleeton. She considered herself both Episcopalian and Baptist and some of her fondest childhood memories were Vacation Bible School at Fairport Baptist Church. As an adult, she was very active in the Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Warsaw Baptist Church. Education was very important to her and even though she retired she never stopped teaching; in fact, she was teaching to the end.
