Obituary for Doswell Rice White (Rice)

Doswell Rice White of Kilmarnock, Virginia died on August 18, 2014. She was born in Alfonso, Virginia on December 17, 1919 to the late Addie and Eva Bryant Rice.

Doswell was also preceded in death by two siblings, Russell Rice and Pauline Marsh and her husband of 50 years, Gilbert “Bill” S. White.

Surviving family includes daughter, Lori Coile of Alameda, Calif.; son, Paul White of Warsaw, Va.; granddaughter, Courtney Coile and her husband, Henry Roman and their children, Nathaniel and Meredith of Sudbury, Mass.; grandson, Zac Coile and his wife, Diane Sullivan and their children, Katherine and Emily, of Washington, D. C. ; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Rice of Richmond, Va. and four nieces and four nephews.

As a young woman, Doswell ventured to Washington, D. C. to work in the war records division of the State Department. She met and married fellow Northern Neck native, Bill White in 1945. For the next 40 years they made their home and raised a family in Alexandria, Va. Doswell kept the home fires burning while Bill captained the oil tanker, Yacona for Gulf Oil/Chevron. Following his retirement, Doswell had the opportunity to work again outside the home. She enjoyed employment with a mortgage banking company, where her accounting skills and work ethic were much valued. In 1985, Doswell and Bill retired to the Northern Neck, “come-backs” to the place thy both loved best.
