Obituary for Willard Smith "Bill" Barnes

Willard “Bill” S. Barnes, 79, of White Stone, Virginia died on October 17, 2014. He was born on October 30, 1934 in Goshen, New York, son of the late Smith and Frances Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a U. S. Air Force Veteran.

Surviving is his wife, Barbara Barnes; his three children, Willard S. Barnes, Jr., Ellen Amland and Paul Barnes; six step children, E. Howard Amland, Ted Amland, Michael R. Amland, Mary Theora Ives, William P. Amland and Teresa Porath; eight grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren;his sister, Barbara Zazzero and his niece, Barbara Jean Brunning, her husband, Ben and their son, Joseph. He was preceded in death by his brother, Earl “Bud” Barnes.

After retiring as a Major from the Air Force, Bill worked as an RN at the Newport News Shipyard for many years. He then worked at Rappahannock General Hospital and Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury Clinic.

He was an active parishioner at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Kilmarnock and was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Bill volunteered in youth sports all of his life, officiating little league, soccer and basketball. He helped with Senior Olympics but his greatest love was his involvement with Special Olympics.

A Mass of Resurrection will be said 11:00 a. m. Tuesday, October 21 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Kilmarnock. Family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. Monday, October 20 at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p. m.
