John Norwood McCarty, 96, of Ottoman, died November 23, 2012. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Whitechapel Episcopal Church, Lively and a dedicated Sexton of the cemetery for many years. Trinity Episcopal Church named Norwood the Unsung Hero in 2010.
Norwood was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Haynie McCarty and his daughter, Mary Alice Glancy. Surviving are a son, John Robert McCarty of Ottoman; six grandchildren, Robert Don McCarty of Lam Poc, Calif., Kelly Sue Sanders of Warsaw, Richard D. Glancy, Jr. of Richmond, J. Michael Glancy of Ottoman, Mary Jane Jordan of Richmond and Susan Kay Eggers of Waldwick, N. J.; nine great-grandchildren and one great- great granddaughter.
Norwood was a retired Experimental Mechanic with the Naval Surface Weapons Station, formerly the Naval Surface Warfare Center of Dahlgren, Va. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing “Big Band” music.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 28 at St Mary’s Whitechapel Episcopal Church, Lively. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 27 at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.
