I am very sorry to read in a UMW communication I just received that Dr. Van Sant died on Sunday. I had him for Philosophy my freshman year at Mary Washington, in 1967. He was an excellent teacher and presented complex subject matter in an engaging way. Dr. Van Sant did his best to communicate clearly, and often with humor, the ideas of these wonderful philosophers (although even Dr. V.S. couldn't make me love Emmanuel Kant). I actually had Dr. Van Sant only for that one class, but he was a memorable professor. I was happy to see he was at UMW when I attended my 40th reunion in 2011. He looked wonderful; I'm sorry to hear he is gone. I will always remember him with fondness.
